“As a painter, much of my work has been influenced by classic illustrations of plants and birds. I take this inspiration a step further to transform the images into something personal. By focusing on the small details of nature, I hope to evoke a feeling of reflection and quiet solitude. I incorporate the illustrative quality of this genre along with qualities of the decorative arts, such as china painting and fabric design, as a tribute to past traditions. I am inspired by the idea of combining the fractured beauty and transparency of mosaic glass with the light and depth-producing techniques that I use in my painting. The layers that result are meaningful to me because they possess simplicity of form, yet hopefully convey a sense of memory and mystery.”
